Comment: Lovely gym, lovely staff!Only a few minor gripes:There are no air filters removing chalk to help with the A/C troubles because it goes down every summer (not to mention being easier on the lungs). This is probably a symptom of the huge crowds that find their way into the gym at peak hours, so I guess that can’t be helped. Great facility otherwise :D AC aside, the setting is still awesome and the people are great.2024 July heat wave update: The AC is functioning. Seems like they’ve worked out whatever the previous issues were. 5* as long as it continues working 😌 I’d give 6 stars if they were to install/upgrade air filters to deal w the chalky and smelly peak hours. Shoutout again to the staff for being great ppl.

Comment: Great gym with a really great variety of problems and friendly staff. Downsides: It gets really busy and sometimes pretty hot. The holds can get pretty greasy because of high volume. Upsides: the setting is really good. There are boulder problems up to v10 or 11 so if youre stronger than that I guess...go outside 🤷. Lots of great training areas, full gym that allows chalk. 👍

Comment: The climbing and staff are great, but the facilities could use a lot of work. For example, the bathrooms - the probability of having soap and paper towels in a given sink is like 50%, and I find myself always botheringthe person next to me to get some soap. Keeping the bathroom supplies fully stocked seems like the bare minimum given the steep $117/mo membership price.Unfortunately, it seems they can get away with it since there’s no other climbing gym chain in South Bay (Sunnyvale has the same problem). The actual bouldering routes are well set (could change more frequently), but as someone who comes 3x a week, I dread the bathroom experience. I also feel like it’s an easy fix (just make sure the staff replace soap and paper towels every hour or two?). One of the water fountains has also been broken for at least a week, and the one working one has a red filter light. Also the ventilation here is awful, chalk everywhere can’t be good for the lungs.I’ll update my review if they fix these issues, but until then, keeping it as is to encourage the owners to do better.Update: a few days after owner’s response, there are still no paper towels in the bathroom at 10:30pm. Why is it the responsibility of the gym goers to ask for the paper towels to be restocked? By the time I walk over to the front desk my hands will be half dry anyways, and there’s just water all over the bathroom floor from people not able to dry their hands. Here’s an idea - ask every employee to check the bathroom stalls for empty paper towels once an hour. Seems easy enough and should make it less likely for there to be two simultaneously empty dispensers! Still 1 star for me :(

Comment: UPDATE May 1, 2024: Movement Santa Clara charged my credit card after I asked them to stop charging me. Then, they sent me an email later today stating “I am happy to provide a digital Movement gift card for the $117 value of your May monthly dues.”DO BETTER. Respect your customers and avoid these scammy marketing tactics. This boulder gym in santa clara is over priced and not women friendly. This gym gets extremely hot during the summer. Last year they said they added AC but it was still hot and humid. This place is too crowded to climb safely. There should be limits on how many people are near the wall.Gym equipment area is packed and dirty with kids running around unattended to.Women’s restroom - there is no steam/sauna room…When there is a class going on they make you stop working out and you have to go outside. At peak hours the air quality is dirty and you can see chalk. The whole place smells bad.Upper management doesn’t have manners and they don’t know how to solve basic problems, like canceling my membership.April 29, 2024They refuse to cancel my membership. I was told I need to physically come into this location in order to cancel. I came in and they now are telling me no one is in the office and I need to send an email to the membership team. When I sent an email, I get an automated message saying they won’t cancel my membership because it’s the 29th of April. This is absurd. I do not want to pay for May.The membership fees has gone up to $122 a month. No thank you. Please cancel my membership.

Comment: Ive been a member here for a year-and-a-half, and I climb 3-5 times a week on average at a V5-6 level. Ive been climbing for almost a decade and visit gyms all over the country when I travel for work. This review is designed for people who climb seriously and are interested in membership. I like this gym, but there are a few things that do not excite me.Likes:- Difficult and creative routes. Routes span the breadth from technical-static to pumpy-dynamic and regularly surprise with interesting moves.- Large space with every variety of wall angle.- Full weight-training and aerobics area. This area is typically uncrowded but becomes crowded during peak hours.- Clean locker rooms. I can only speak for the mens locker room, though.Dislikes:- Extremely crowded: During peak hours nearly every occupiable walkway is blocked by people. I have to schedule around these times as it becomes difficult to actually climb.- Confusing culture: The community here continues to confound me. The culture of this gym seems to be very introverted, despite how many people are in the gym at any time. At first I thought it was me, but after visiting other gyms and having very social experiences (as is my expectation at climbing gyms), I feel more confident saying this gym has an antisocial culture. In my experience people who climb here socialize exclusively with those they came with. Its very confusing.- Route-setting oddities: Particularly in the V4-6 range the rating can be wildly inaccurate as a measure of difficulty. There are many routes featuring dynamic moves that are closer to parkour than climbing. I have heard that some of their climbs are impossible or improbable for folks of smaller statures and I agree with that. I am 6 with a large wingspan and I regularly finish a climb only to wonder how anyone shorter than me would complete it.- Membership Price: At $117/mo I would expect a bit more; you can attend a high-end gym with a full suite of amenities for that price. I dont feel Im getting my moneys worth despite how regularly I attend, but maybe thats a personal problem. It seems climbing gyms in the area are extremely expensive, but this rate is (to my knowledge) the highest in the south bay.I am sad to admit this review is ultimately very critical but I think this is a great gym with room for improvement. Im willing to overlook poor HVAC and faulty lockers (these things could be outside the control of management) but I do think with how much I pay the experience would be a little more premium. I am a member here because it is closest to me and I need to climb to keep myself sane, but if there was a better option I would choose it. Hope this helps you.

Comment: Have had several items stolen over the course of the year and a half which includes several rolls of climbing tape and a chalk brush, as well as a chalk bag that I later saw being used by someone else. You’re better off spending time and saving money driving to Pacific Edge in Santa Cruz or going to any Touchstone gym in the Bay Area.

Comment: I decided to check out Movement Santa Clara to try a new gym in the northern California area, and its enjoyable. Ive been to Movement in Orange, and Santa Clara seems like they have a larger boulder area but a smaller gym section. The ceilings dont go as high, so they do feel slightly cramped inside the bouldering area. The routes range from VB to one v11. The difficulty seems on par with the other gyms in the area. The routes were varied in technique and skill but overall really interesting climbs. This gym also uses Kaya as the climbing app, which helps solo climbers figure out betas or log their sends. Theres a kilter, tension, and campus board for training, and all of those areas were pretty empty the few hours I was there. The bathrooms were clean and were equipped with clean towels and showers but no sauna. The front staff was helpful in checking me in and asking whether I needed any type of rentals. The price for a day pass here is 33 dollars, which is a tad more expensive compared to a few other climbing gyms. This location also got very packed in the evening, around seven, when I was there. Theres plenty of parking, though, which is a bonus. Im definitely checking out the Santa Clara Movement in the future when I return to the area.

Comment: We recently hosted a birthday party for our twin boys who just turned 13, and had a large-ish group of about 15 kids. Jenean and Shea worked with us to make the experience a stellar one, making special accommodations as needed. While most folks there were adults, the staff took care of our group effortlessly, and ensured that each kid in the group had a good experience.

Comment: This is the best bouldering gym in South Bay but sadly its still a 3 star for me. Mainly because I got spoiled by LA Touchstone gyms and Seattle bouldering gyms. The variety of routes are pretty good here. I just wish the routes get reset more often. I also appreciate the spacious training area. Unless there is fitness class going on, I never have a problem getting a squat rack. However, the air ventilation is REALLY bad and it smells pretty bad inside... And especially during crowded hours, you can literally see chalk flying everywhere...

Comment: The best climbing gym in South Bay. It’s much nicer than their Sunnyvale and Belmont location, but not nearly as good as Touchstone gyms in LA and in SF and Oakland.Good: The staff are nice. The gym is large with training areas and the climbing walls are aesthetically pleasing (unlike Movement Sunnyvale and Belmont).Bad: The routes don’t get reset often enough. Most of the routes are also not short people friendly. The air ventilation is really bad and it smells pretty bad inside. You can see chalk flying in the air everywhere. (Touchstone gyms have really great ventilation in comparison). The gym is also too crowded. The bathroom stalls sometimes smell quite bad like they weren’t cleaned often enough.

Comment: I really want to like this gym, but the management is just terrible. It’s a popular spot, yet they never fail to run out of supplies in the changing rooms.Last year around this time the AC broke and now it’s broken yet again, with no timeline to resolution. I’m going to freeze my membership and I’m seriously considering to cancel outright. For $111 per month ($3 higher than last year) I really expected more. If only they had some real competition in the SJ area…[update]The AC seems better, but it’s hardly a consolation given the weather has cooled down. In 2024 the membership will be $117, representing a $6 increase (5.4%). For what you’re getting it’s a hard sell. Touchstone charge much less for nicer facilities.

Comment: Facilities are state of the art, lots of options for those who like competition style boulders. As a woman who went in alone, there was maybe one woman for every twenty six foot tall men. The setting reflected the gender demographic in my opinion, many of the climbs were not accessible for shorter women and were strength based. Staff was friendly, I think the gym just needs to better reflect its entire customer base when setting. Some of the boulders bordered on more dangerous than it’s worth with giant dynos over volumes.

Comment: I like that there’s a lot of squat racks. I never have to wait for one to open. I also like that for the most part, people using them understand common lifting etiquette.Common complaint: the smell here is so strong. This is a newer gym and it smells like you’re walking into an old gym sock. And the AC is supposedly being fixed…for months and months it’s been broken. You can visibly see the chalk floating around in the air throughout the gym. That can’t be good to be breathing in… also.Women’s locker rooms have signs that say to not wear climbing shoes in the bathroom stalls. But there’s so many women walking in and out of there barefoot and then proceed to walk all over the gym. Their feet are black from dirt. Also, there were two women FaceTiming within the women’s locker room. Were they taking a call with a friend? Were they streaming to a social media platform? Not sure. Coming out of the showers feel unsafe.Management: please make sure the locker rooms feel safe.

Comment: No window open, no ventilation, too many people, too much sweat, too much chalk = AC breaks all the time. They need to change windows to openable ones or install chalk filters. The whole gym is greenhouse.AC is broken again and so much sweating makes it impossible to grip holds, my grade is automatically 1-2 down. Had a really dangerous session with a couple of slips, dizziness and headache from heat. Were going to touchstone gyms during summer.

Comment: Update: 3 to 4 stars. They added hand soap dispensers in the bathroom, worked on the AC, and have been on their game topping off the hand lotion!Ive been climbing here regularly for 2 months now. The community is great. The staff here are very friendly. The routes and work out equipment are well maintained. Grading is a bit harder than gyms Ive been to in Dallas. The bathrooms are clean but the Mens restroom is frequently out of hand soap and or lotion during peak hours. I wish they had a hand wash station in the climbing area.

She makes it a safe place for you to just feel comfortable in your own body and explore it in many of the simple poses/exercises we do. It’s easy to follow along. Comment: I wish I could give negative rating if it allows. The smell inside is very bad. Its hot even with AC on. And the AC is always broken and it takes months to fix. Its way too hot, uncomfortable and crowded in the gym. The holds are significantly more greasy than any other gyms I have been to. Water filter, soap dispenser, and paper towel very often lack replacement / refill. Whats worse, the routes are only for dynamic climbers or if you are 6+ft. The idea of the route setters is use an old V0/V1 route, and add one dynamic move, then it becomes a V4, and add two dynamic move, then it becomes a V5. The result is you’ll see people get injured and ambulance comes now and then. Really dangerous. The day pass and membership are expensive, not worth the money.

Comment: Good sized gym with a fair number of climbs in the v3 and under range. I am nursing a minor finger injury so I avoided and crimps and pockets and I was still able to find 42 climbs here v3 and under I could do to get some exercise. Interesting problems in that range, some of the slabs were tricky for that range and they even had some v1s with heavy use of under clings and v2s with heavy use of slopers. So definitely some interesting route setting. Lots of beginners here when I went. So it was somewhat annoying that they didnt know basic climbing etiquette, but the staff tried to kindly remind them. Small shop attached and I was able to get a post climb kombucha. All together a fun experience.

Comment: **Edited review: After the installation of AC, I can now fully recommend this location for climbers who are interested in bouldering. They have a wide range of problems and due to the size of the location, theres always something new to work on. Highly recommend!****Previous review:Have you ever wanted to perform rigorous physical activity in an absolute quagmire of muggy heat? Well, look no further than this gym! The climbing here would be fantastic if it weren’t for the management’s absolutely greedy and miserly behavior in refusing to provide decent conditions for both their staff and their patrons to climb in. For such a huge gym, the only airflow consists of two small open doors for a big floor plan. This would be forgivable if there was any AC to be had, but the management has said they are having “someone look at the AC” for the past few MONTHS now with no result, so I can only assume they’re using it as a placebo to placate people in the short term. It’s really quite absurd that a gym these days would disrespect their employees and paying customers so much. Hopefully someone on their management team will see this, but my hopes aren’t high since they clearly don’t care.**

Comment: Its 90 degrees outside and even hotter, humid in the inside - yet no AC for the hottest days of the summer... Seriously my local gym that I pay 40 dollars a month for has better maintenance and service but a gym that I pay near 120 a month for cannot even keep its AC on or bother to fix it for months on end.edit: They finally fixed the AC but they are still lacking in some stuff. Shower stalls with inconsistent waterflow, no soap or lotion or paper towels in the restroom, unimaginative bouldering problems.

I am in the V3-V4 range so I found pretty interesting problems to solve. The space looked pretty clean and the staff was super helpful. The fitness center was also pretty good and clean. I did not check the yoga center though.

Comment: I think the best words to describe my view of the gym is it fell very short of its potential. I remember when the gym was built I thought it was disappointing that the walls were very uninspiring. Theres no top out wall, the wall paneling is very boring with none of them having interesting characteristics or not being used to its greatest potential. Compare this to the newer gym Pacific Pipe where that gym has everything you can wish for from top out wall, super great roof areas, a wall with a wave like curvature, and more.Often times the problems are somewhat uninspiring for me as opposed to its Sunnyvale counterpart which I find the problems much more fun to tackle. I think part of this problem stems from how this gym doesnt use volumes that frequently or well. Sometimes they put a blob of volumes in the same place on a single wall which Id rather call a frankenstein art piece than a climb. Additionally this gym (as a chain) doesnt really buy new or big holds. Competition sized holds would be fantastic to touch but even though they charge each member an exorbitant amount of money theyre too cheap to buy any good interesting holds. I see instagram posts of Japanese climbing gyms that frequently buy new holds and theyre a fraction of the size of this gym but they have way more psyche than here. I do think that this is a pretty good gym for beginners V5 and under but above that I find the problems dont have too many interesting moves. Part of what motivates me in climbing harder climbs is that they usually have some kind of interesting difficult move but I find that most of them are just do you have enough finger or shoulder strength to pull through this problem rather than a combination of cool beta with the prerequisite strengths.Honestly though the biggest problem for me is the fact that staff doesnt enforce safety and etiquette in the gym when theres an overflow of beginners. It would be really greatly appreciated if staff could tell beginners to not climb a problem when theres a climber on the wall nearby. It really gets on my nerves and I have had 0 sessions where I dont see this happening. I constantly have to tell beginners to get off the wall when someone I see or my friend is doing a problem that intersects the one they were attempting.Lastly I constantly get disappointed by whoever manages the social media account for the movement gyms. Quite frankly it just feels like they have 0 psyche for climbing. I see dogpatch or long beach rising frequently reshare peoples sends on their story, I see other places like hangar 18 orange notify you that theres a fresh new set waiting for you to excite users, and movement does none of that. Their social media rarely posts anything interesting. Also theres no working AC but at least that can be fixed, though it has been broken for the longest time (a few years) which goes to show how money grabby they are. Pretty disappointing.

Comment: Are you:1) A newer climber looking to learn the basics with your friends in a beginner-friendly environment?2) Excited about the challenge of physical exertion in an enclosed space that consistently feels 15 degrees hotter and 20% more humid than outside temps, while breathing in the vaporized perspiration of 90 of your climbing compatriots?3) A non-beginner climber seeking to progress, and looking for no more than a small handful of inspiring climbs in your range to work on at any given time?****subtract any climbs on vert walls, as the chances of even approaching the base after wading through crowds are slim at best4) An avid fan of the Concept of cleanliness, but hate it when you turn on the shower and the water actually falls on you instead of splashing every wall except where the nozzle is pointed? If any of the above apply, this is the gym for you! The staff are super friendly and helpful; there’s a good sized training area with a Kilter and a Tension; weight area is spacious and the door there makes you less likely to pass out from heat exhaustion while lifting than climbing; shower heads are state-of-the-art and manage to defy multiple laws of nature to spray down every surface except for the intended ones. This gym seems like it was constructed as Movement’s response to Dogpatch Boulders, and as long as you don’t think about that comparison and just how astonishingly far it falls from that, it’s not a bad gym!

Comment: It was hotter inside than outside… no AC? Way too hot and uncomfortable, crowded. Went to work out instead of climb, and there was space on the benches but there wasn’t much equipment, I didn’t see a stair climber, and there was no way for people to clean off the equipment after use. There was one place in the back where a cleaner bottle was placed on top of a paper towel dispenser to use but the paper towel dispenser wasn’t working. Didn’t feel sanitary/clean since no one was wiping the equipment. We likely won’t be back to this location.

Comment: Although the gym is quite large it is continuously very crowded. The holds are always significantly more greasy than other gyms I have been to. Many of the routes seem to be set very awkwardly, and as far as I can tell, a V3 here is basically the same as a V4 anywhere else. The worst part of this gym is they never turn on the AC, so on hot days it can get unbearable hot inside. I’m not sure everyone rates this gym so highly when it is one of the worst gyms I have ever been to.

Comment: First time here and first time even rock climbing/bouldering at all and I have to say it was a great experience! My friend randomly asked me if I wanted to try out rock climbing and me being a yes man, I said sure! When I first arrived, I was waiting for my friend who was just getting off work at the time. The staff was very helpful in getting me onboarded with the paperwork and an intro video. Then I spent sometime watching people climb while I waited for my friend. Honestly, watching people climb was really fun because you get to see how everyone tried the different routes in their unique ways! When my friend got there, I used his guess pass (every member gets 6 per year and you can use 2 max per month) to get in. He showed me the ropes (not literally) and I had a great time! Everyone was really supportive of one another and had great manners. Also, one big thing to note, the environment was very safe! We left our phones and chalk bags laying around while we were on a route on the other side of the room for a good 20 mins and when we came back everything was still there! Its a great place and will definitely be back again! :)

Comment: First time back since March. I think they’re doing a good job with capacity given how much space they have. I’m sure it changes depending on the day and time, but from 5:15-7pm on a Monday it seemed like about 20%-30% of people were using the conditioning area at any given time. Lots of sanitation stations, plenty of space to spread out (even if all the good areas can get a little congested - 4-5 people), and generally the same problems they had up when they closed. They put up ropes on the walls to create zones and state no more than 1 person can be climbing in a zone at a time, which I like.A few other things:- reduced cardio equipment- obviously no showers or changing/locker rooms- they ask everyone to clean equipment before and after use, another good thing- airdyne, rowers, barbells, etc are all still usable (except a few airdynes have their seats removed, probably to help promote distance between people)I think the sanitation measures are good but it’s really the limited capacity and our adherence to the symptom screening, social distancing and wearing appropriate masks (e.g., not buffs) that will keep these facilities from closing again - in and out of the gym.Safe climbing!
