Sizes do run a bit on the larger side, but thats just additional motivation to fit in them.Also special shoutout to the customer support team for addressing my shipping issue in such a timely and receptive manner. Last week another bench went out of service, two benches are also broken that wont allow them to be repositioned, one is missing the little lever head to adjust the position. The yoga mats!! The rower has been broken since we joined almost 3 months ago. The air bike, went MIA last week as well so now its just the treadmill that works and even that one is asking for maintenance.

Comment: Awesome atmosphere but relatively subpar everything else.After having visited South Bay, exceed, and now going to Mission Fitness Center, I have to say what you get at BB for $100 is pretty overpriced.I get it’s the closest to down town but it’s still not in an amazing location to justify the cost.Only 2 dedicated deadlifting platforms, and 3 benches is ridiculous for a gym this expensive. Very limited amount of kilos as well. There really isn’t that many free standing benches either to move around and use in the cages, and almost all the benches (including the actual powerlifting benches) and machines have super ripped, taped up fabric/leather.Very limited selection of machines for a powerlifting gym. And I get the “we’re a powerlifting gym we don’t have cardio machines” but having some to warm up on (like most powerlifting gyms) before squats or deadlifts would be nice. Especially given the lack of any temperature control in the building and how the garage door in the back remains fully open on cold nights.Love BB as a company, love the owners since watching the YouTube is what got me into lifting years ago but was pretty underwhelmed with this gym. It has not kept up with the rest of the powerlifting gyms in the area.

When I tried to go in, the girl at the front desk kept saying there was no record of that purchase transaction.I immediately got Visa on the phone and sure enough, they said Barbell Brigade did take $50 two days prior despite the front desk girl claiming there was no record of it. This whole annoying ordeal took so long, I didnt even get to train that night. Just a reminder to stay vigilant when in comes to your credit card transactions.

Im in town visiting and was able to go online and reserve a space. I purchased a five day guest pass. Whenever I am in town again, I would definitely go back here. Opens at 5 a.m. and closes at 12 a.m. whatever your schedule it can accommodate. Only thing to know is that it is currently reservation only. So you must go online and book a time slot. They book up fast so you would want to be proactive for the days and times you want.

It was basic and Olympic standard equipment set up you can find anywhere else in the country. Spacious enough to move comfortably, but looked like an out dated storage room or some old warehouse. I feel like the gym no longer has that homie vibe. Also I used to tolerate the prices because of the old staff but now it’s not worth it at all. Why would I pay triple the amount of a commercial gym when it doesn’t have nearly the same amount of equipment and has the same feel as a commercial gym.

Comment: Great spacious gym with tons of equipment for functional training, weightlifting and powerlifting. For the weightlifting crowd, this gym has dedicated platforms with bars and plates in kilos which is really nice and rare in most US gyms in this genre. They have some of the really cool accessory machines like a belt squat and a reverse hyper. During mid-day it was not too crowded either. I was there on one of the hotter days of summer and it was pretty hot inside the gym but they have a couple of big fans that you can walk over too between sets.

Comment: I thought, originally, this gym was an awesome place to get in a workout, especially if you are into powerlifting and bodybuilding. I liked all the old school equipment and the staff was cool. The only thing I didnt like about the place was the $100 monthly charge. This is incredibly pricey for a gym.I am a full-time student at USC and I usually workout at the gym there. However, it closed down for the summer, so I had to find a new gym temporarily. I chose this place, because of the convient location and the fact that there were no initiation or cancelation fees, plus I love powerlifting.I asked about the price when I joined and why it was so high.. I was told it was because they have equipment no one else has and they wanted to get more new equipment. I have been lifting consistently for almost 8 years now. I have been to several gyms on base, when I was in the Marines Corps, and countless civilian gyms in California and the South East, including 24hour, LA fitness, and Max Fitness. I can tell you this gym is not worth $100 a month, save your money and go elsewhere!I was originally intending to give this place at least 3 stars and wouldve recommended it, if you dont mind the price. However, when I tried to cancel my membership on the 20th, of this month, they had already charged me $100 for the entire next month (the transaction was pending at the time). Granted, I had started my membership on the 18th, nonetheless I had not worked out there since the 16th and I didnt intend to workout there again. They would not give me a refund and kept my money. I was told that once the transaction went through they could not cancel it. Even so, they couldve easily given me a cash refund, having a $20 a day non-membership fee, but they elected not to.This ultimately leads me to believe that this place is just another money hungry gym. I would stay away and find much better gym thats worth the price.

Examples include, but are DEFINITELY not limited to:Texas power barsOlympic platesBumper platesChains WITH collarsSafety Squat barsPlyo boxesPower sledAnd all the chalk your heart desiresThis is not a typical gym and is geared towards a powerlifting/Olympic lifting/Westside Barbell crowd. There are more power racks and deadlift platforms than there are machines. This gym wont be for everyone. But everyone is welcome and both staff and regulars show it. There is no judgement as long as you lift with safety and youre not a jerk to anyone else.Classes arent offered regularly, but Barbell Brigade attracts some of the biggest names in fitness, powerlifting, and coaching, so there are often competitions, classes, and seminars led by some of the best. And most of the staff members are happy to help if you have questions.UPDATE 2017: While I stand by the rest of my review, I knocked off 2 stars and went from 5 to 3 because they recently changed their hours. It does seem a bit harsh, but the fact that Barbell Brigade was open 24 hours was a HUGE reason why I decided to leave the commercial gym and workout there, as it is for many others who have odd schedules. Hopefully soon they bring back the 24 hours, or at least stay open a tiny bit later. I dont know. I am quite upset about it.

I use the bicycle from DTLA to visit the box and i guess its easy to access with bus as well. Nadeem, Lu, Joe are a few cool dudes that i met. Loud music, amazing atmosphere where the strongest dudes train there. Who knows you may run into some others youtubers as well;) I dont know if something change the last 2 years but definitely go check it. They have everything you need to train.

Comment: This place really was a godsend. I had finished my weight loss journey and had gone from 225lbs to 140lbs at 56. This place, and more importantly Lu, Art, and several members helped me see that there was more to life than abs. So my journey started over and I went from around 400lbs (s+b+d) to the 1000lb club in a year.The camaraderie, the support, the family vibe, the there is no failure only learning and improving and trying again. They truly are a family there. I am saddened that I no longer live down the street.Dominate Humbly.

Comment: During a recent trip to Los Angeles, I thought Id check out Barbell Brigade due to all the positive hype surrounding it and the fact that I am approaching a meet. Upon arriving, I met Lu at the front desk, who was incredibly welcoming and friendly. He helped me find my way around the equipment and even offered to record two of my sets when my phone storage filled up. The gym environment is second to none. Almost immediately, youll notice the place has an aura of community and positivity, while still maintaining that hardcore edge that youre looking for in a powerlifting gym. I can honestly say that this is the gold standard for gyms, and I know without a doubt that Ill be paying Barbell Brigade a visit every time Im in the LA area.

Comment: Heaven is a place on earth and it is called Barbell Brigade. The staff is amazing. As soon as I walked in the door, everyone in the front desk area was talking to me as though we had known each other for awhile. Super friendly. The gym has everything you need to get strong as an ox. Specialty bars, oly platforms, deadlift platforms, multiple power racks and EliteFTS competition benches. Youve also got a bunch of strong man and bodybuilding equipment in there too. You can put on any music you want and pretty much go ape. I was in Hawthorne for two days and caught an Uber out to BB twice. It rules. Best gym Ive ever been to.
